Member of the National Sheriff Association

Dear Mercer County Resident,

I want to personally welcome you to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office website. This site is intended to honor past and present members for their hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. It is also being created with the idea of further extending services to the citizens of Mercer County keeping you informed of progress and services that are available through this office. Since this is a pioneer type launching of a new service to you, we hope to make it a work in progress, continually improving and adding services as we get feedback from the community that we serve. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Sheriff. I consider the position to be a great honor and will honestly do my best to fulfill the duties of this office. I will also be working towards a long time personal dream, that being, to further the noble position of the Police Officer who daily goes in harm’s way to protect our lives, rights and property, giving this person the position, rights and respect that are deserved for such dedication and service to his fellow man.

The Sheriff, as the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the County, is required by statute to keep and preserve the peace, serve and execute all processes, writs, precepts and orders issued or made by lawful authorities, and serve the civil courts of record held in the County. The Sheriff is also responsible for collecting all taxes levied by the County Government and serves as the County Treasurer. He is elected by the voters and can serve two, four-year terms.

The men and women of the Sheriff’s Office serve Mercer County with pride, integrity and a dedicated community spirit. The Sheriff’s Office is not just a law enforcement agency; it is a public safety organization. During the past year considerable effort has been made by the new administration to upgrade an aging fleet of police vehicles and the old Prosecuting Attorney’s Office which was vacated with the opening of the new Court House Annex has been renovated to give a much needed increase in office space. The older portions of the office are in the process of renovation as funds will allow. A new work area with computer stations for the Public Safety Division will be included in the process.  A Wellness and Fitness Center are also in the advanced planning stage and will be included.  A much needed interrogation and interview room with appropriate monitoring and recording equipment is also being proposed. The Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit has been reactivated with one officer and K-9 being fully trained at this time.  We have plans for two additional K-9’s with trained deputies as their handlers in the not too distant future. All of these changes which we feel represent progress for the Sheriff’s Office are intended to increase the efficiency of the office in the performance of its duties. The majority of the progress described above has been accomplished through donations from the public, pistol permit and calendar funds, plus the donation of time by off duty officers with additional help from citizens doing community service hours paying their debt for crimes committed. The goal here is to improve the quality of public safety services while being a  good steward of your tax dollar.

We intend to continue with more progress into the 21st century earning increased respect and support from our community and together we can  and will make a difference and ensure that Mercer County continues to be a safe place to live, raise families, conduct business and enjoy life.

         Sincerely,

        Danny R. Wills

       Sheriff
