Chief's Biographical Highlights        

 
 
 

    

Chief Deputy Darrell B. Bailey was born in Bluefield, WV in 1960. He is a 1978 graduate of Montcalm High School and is married to Carrie (Lafferty) Bailey. They have three children, Joshua, Brandon and Christina.

Chief Bailey is a 1983 graduate of the West Virginia State Corrections Academy and a 1986 graduate of the West Virginia State Police Academy. He has several credited hours from Marshall University in Police Science.

In June 1983 Chief Bailey began his career with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department as a Correctional Officer in the former Mercer County Jail. In December 1985 Chief Bailey was hired by the Princeton Police Department obtaining the ranks of Detective and Sergeant. In January 1991 Chief Bailey returned to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department and spent several years working as Chief Detective.   Later, due to his leadership ability and performance, he received a series of promotions, including Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain prior to his final promotion in June, 2004 to Chief Deputy.  The Chief Deputy is second in command, only to the Sheriff, and is responsible for the day to day operations of the entire law enforcement division.   

Chief Bailey was Chief Karate Instructor of the Southern WV Goju-Ryu Karate Club from 1983 to 2001. He is certified by the Governors Committee on Crime, Delinquency and Correction, teaching Police Defensive Tactics, Use of Force, and Firearms Instruction, to law-enforcement officers for their mandatory in-service training. Chief Bailey also teaches self-defense courses to various groups within the community.
