Mission Statement

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office is committed to quality service with an emphasis on integrity, professionalism, and community spirit.  We maintain an ongoing effort to protect and preserve the rights of the citizens of Mercer County through crime prevention, detection and the maintenance of order.  We consider it our duty to deliver this beneficial service in a friendly and non threatening manner.  The Sheriff’s Office strives to ensure the safety and well-being of the public by enforcing the various statutes of the State of West Virginia and the municipalities within Mercer County.  This includes providing support and cooperation to other law enforcement agencies in our jurisdiction insuring the best overall police protection that is possible given our current staffing and budget.  Additional duties and responsibilities mandated by the State Constitution and the Legislature will also be carried out in the most efficient manner.  These include providing security for the Mercer County Court House and Annex, Court Bailiff’s for Circuit & Magistrate Court, serving of Domestic Violence Petitions and all civil process plus legal documents, transporting of all Mental Hygiene cases and the collection of county taxes levied per state law.

 

Our vision is to maintain and enhance the confidence that the public has placed in us by developing a safer and more secure community in which to live.  We will strive to do this by supplying high quality, cost-effective law enforcement that is community friendly.  This will be accomplished through dedication and ongoing training consistent with the 21st century requirements and needs.  More community involvement through education of the public, Neighborhood Watch & similar programs recommended by the National Sheriff’s Association will be utilized.
